BBC Breakfast has confirmed that Sally Nugent will become a permanent presenter on the show following the departure of Louise Minchin.

The now-former presenter departed the morning show last month, having confirmed her exit back in June after 20 years on the series.

Sally, who has been part of the BBC Breakfast team for nearly 10 years as a sports presenter, will present regularly from Monday to Wednesday with immediate effect, joining Dan Walker, Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt on the sofa.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to become the new presenter of BBC Breakfast and bring the nation the latest news, top entertainment guests and stories that matter every week," she said.

"It's an honour to take the reins from Louise and be part of the UK's most-watched breakfast show."

Over the years, Sally has interviewed a number of high-profile figures, including Marcus Rashford, Lewis Hamilton and Tom Daley.

Speaking when she announced her departure, Louise said over the summer: "I wanted to thank everybody who's watching for your loyalty and support over all those years. I have absolutely loved being part of it.

"I will really miss it. But it is time now to stop that alarm early in the morning, and thank you for watching all those years as well."

BBC Breakfast airs weekday mornings on BBC One.
