PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Sensing a need in the community that was formerly supported by the efforts of the Parma Heights Food Pantry, the Cuyahoga County Public Library is now offering a Mobile Pantry distributing free food the third Wednesday of the month at its Greenbrier Commons location.

“This is a partnership with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank,” Parma Heights Branch Manager Krista Tokarz said. “Generally, the Parma Heights Food Pantry was doing the distribution and for various reasons they could no longer do it so I volunteered the library.”

Depending on the time of the year, the free Mobile Pantry will distribute either fresh produce or non-perishable items on a first-come, first-served basis to adults based on zip code and income level.

Held rain or shine, the Parma Heights branch’s curbside pick-up involves food loaded into vehicle trunks.

Parma Heights’ first Mobile Pantry took place earlier this month serving roughly 30 households with the season’s last batch of fresh produce -- summer squash, peppers, oranges, potatoes and carrots.

“The first one went well considering we didn’t have a lot of publicity,” Tokarz said. “They were extremely grateful. A couple of residents from the complex next door walked over and carried the food back to the apartments. We’re hoping the word will spread.

“We had three local food pantries take the leftovers. We also gave what was left to customers in the library.”

Not only is the Parma Heights Library the sixth branch in the system to offer the Mobile Pantry but the venue, also in conjunction with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, continues to offer children free weekday grab-and-go meals during the school year.

“We strive to be a vital part of the community Tokarz said. “We want to be able to help the members of the community get what they need, whether it’s food for the kids after school or it’s food for the whole family.

“We want to be a community hub for Parma Heights.”
